Omani Traditional Food That You Must Try

One of the wonders of authentic Omani culture is the mouth-watering and ingredient rich traditional cuisine. With influences from Indian, Persian, Mediterranean, and North American Cuisines, Omani food gives you the appetising taste of assorted culinary techniques and fusion of spices. Majboos 


This traditional food in Oman is also known as Makboos and Kabsa, and is a popular dish in the Arab world. It is a mix of rice, seasoned with ingredients like saffron, ginger, and nutmeg, giving it a flavor like no other. The mixed rice also consists of vegetables, meat, and tasteful spices, and often times served with either yogurt, traditional bread, green salad, and/or sauces.

Shuwa

Shuwa is grilled meat, which is usually prepared for special occasions like Eid. Preparing this dish takes a little long time, where the meat is marinated with Omani spices, wrapped in banana or palm leaves, and put inside an underground sand oven. Omani people usually start the process on the first day of Eid, and get the food cooked for one or two days. This unique method of preparing this dish makes it even tastier.

Kahwa

Kahwa is the Arabian coffee, which is framed for its exclusive taste and texture. This coffee is made more flavourful by using cardamom powder, and is usually served with Halwa and dates. You will find Kahwa being served in small cups in most of the Omani restaurants. This drink is considered as an important part of Omani hospitality.  

Meshkak

Meshkak or Kebab is marinated beef, mutton, or chicken that is grilled not cooked. It is seasoned with different spices and served with Omani breads. This dish is popular around the country, especially during celebrations.

Halwa


Halwa is an Omani dessert with a stronger texture than custard. It consists of sugar, rose water, honey, eggs, and several nuts. You will often find it being served with Kahwa and dates.
